A well-written, consistently followed operations manual will help you beat the odds and join the 20 percent of small business start-ups that are still around after five years.

In an operations manual, everything about your business is standardized and documented. It becomes a toolkit for replicating what you do. It can become your training textbook, saving you countless hours and helping people with different strengths and skill levels to perform tasks in the same way. Clients can also be assured of a consistent experience.

If you intend to franchise, documenting everything in an operations manual is essential. Mike Cotsworth of Car Connections Ltd. is planning to franchise his business soon. “Having a formalized system for franchisees to follow will prevent them from taking short cuts or dreaming up their own ways of doing things — which may dilute or derail a proven way of doing something,” he explains. “This has forced me to examine and define what the best steps are and write them down. Before doing this, I had it all in my head, so I worked by habit and experience. Now it’s being formalized into specific steps that someone else can follow.”

If your business is currently just you, clearly documented procedures are valuable. Carol Johnson, The BookStormer, helps authors bring their book ideas to fruition. “I documented each process in my work,” she told us. “I did this for anyone else I might train in the future, but having this process in place also lets me fine-tune it as I go. I can easily use it to meet each author’s specific needs. The biggest challenge for me was just sitting down and doing it.”

Write Your Manual

“When writing, you must think of your audience and set the tone accordingly,” Craig Dietz of Special Ops, LLC, advises. “Don’t use legalese, make it readable and use practical, easy-to-understand language. Know your topics and the people you’re writing to.”

Step One: Know Where You’re Going

Consider where you ultimately want to take the business, and keep this in mind as you write.

Step Two: Get Organized

Create an organization chart for your company. Draw boxes for each major area of responsibility. This offers a visual overview of the business that is easy to see at a glance.

Step Three: Start Writing

Set up a file on your computer or use a three-ring binder or notebook for your first draft. Assign a different section for each aspect of the business, then:

o Outline each section

o Develop a job description for the person responsible

o List all necessary tasks

o Write down exactly what is involved for each task

o Spell out step-by-step instructions and a sequence to follow for each task

Use pictures, diagrams or charts to illustrate or clarify your points.

As you write, think about all the things that could possibly go wrong, list these and build in action steps to correct them.

Step Four: Get Feedback

Ask several others with similar experience and backgrounds to those of your reader to look over the document and give you feedback. Find out if there were steps you missed, details you forgot to mention, or words and concepts they didn’t easily understand.

Step Five: Polish It

Write your second draft. If the manual is for others to use, consider hiring a professional editor.

Step Six: Schedule Regular Reviews

Set times, perhaps once a year, to regularly review and update your manual. If you have added new products, services or markets, or made any changes in the way you do things, this information should be included.

Don’t wait until the business is mature to write your manual. Begin now. If you can’t devote a large block of time, allocate several hours each week to the project. If you’re consistent, you will soon have it completed and be ready to grow a healthy, profitable business. You will also be able to enjoy a vacation, knowing that those left in charge are able to do a first-rate job of running the business while you’re gone.

Britain’s oldest mother! Giving birth at the age of 66! The papers are full of the news about the woman, Elizabeth Munro, who is due to become the oldest Mum in Britain in a few weeks. As you might expect, there are opinions left, right and sideways about whether this is “right.” Since the news was released this weekend, Munro has taken the spotlight that was previously on “OctoMom” in California.

So, what about Ms Munro’s first baby at 66? The Sunday Times reported yesterday that Munro went to a clinic in the Ukraine for her IVF treatment because doctors in England will not treat infertile women at that advanced age. The NHS policy is not to treat infertility in women over the age of 39 years old, but private fertility clinics in England can be persuaded to do so into the fifties.

The debate circles two issues: On the one hand, there are the health risks of the pregnancy, birth and development of the child and on the other hand, the age of the child when the mother eventually dies. From what I read, Munro is an energetic, healthy woman who has had a normal pregnancy. As the birth is imminent, she has presumably had good medical care all along. In the photo in The Sunday Times, she barely appears to be pregnant. She is a mature, independent, single mother to be. She is not seeking the publicity that Octomom courted and has asked for her privacy to be respected. She is the managing director of a plastics business, so I am guessing that she is intelligent and capable. On what grounds should this woman and her pregnancy be judged, if at all?

Medical advances have made this pregnancy possible. Science has already extended the estimated average life span for women to the age of 83 from 74.2 years in 1970. Should we not take advantage of those achievements to have the lifestyle that we want, including parenting at an advanced age? Men have fathered children past the age of 66. There have been recent reports that a father’s age affects the development of his child, but it didn’t cause this kind of stir when Des O’Conner became a father at 72. I suspect many people thought of his virility for the first time in a decade or two and gave him a thumb up.

Casting the physical issues aside then, the criticism seems to be about the longevity of the mother’s life and the child’s age when eventually orphaned. Professor Severino Antinori, whose treatment enabled Patricia Rashbrook to give birth to a son at the age of 62 in 2006, says that 63 is the oldest a mother should give birth, assuring the child would be mothered for 18 to 20 years, notwithstanding any intervening, untimely causes of death. Is he having a case of sour grapes because his record was bettered by someone else? There doesn’t seem to be much in it to me: 63, 64, 65, 66… Those numbers don’t usually equate in our minds with the phrase “new mother.”

Having a mother the age of the average grandmother seems to point to one all-encompassing question of fairness to the child. Within that question, the reasons that arise are her overall health and stamina as the years go on, her ability to create positive social relationships that benefit the child, and how she will cope with the behaviour, attitudes, social needs and activities of a child who is two generations younger.

I must admit that I was on the fence about this issue. My first thought, when I heard of it, was “How will she cope with a newborn baby at that age?” When I last gave birth at 42, I had a nap every day for the first six months, taking full advantage of a nurse’s tip to “sleep when your baby sleeps.” The last day that my house was entirely tidy and clutter-free right was before the Millennium. We know nothing about Elizabeth Munro, except that at the age of 66, with a good career and no partner, she still wanted to be a mother. She didn’t just think about it with regret; she went and did something about it. A woman that focused on such a controversial and life-changing goal has probably ticked all the boxes on the checklist time and again. For all we know, she may have younger relatives and friends who will be a part of her child’s life, both as company and/or role models and even possibly nominated as guardians.

There still lingered a certain distaste at the thought of a pregnant 66 year old, sitting uncomfortably in my mind as slightly outside the unusual and verging on the abnormal. However, fertility being my specialization and informed open-mindedness being my aim, I weighed this against the fact that plenty of grandmothers have stepped in to care for, raise and even save, their abandoned or orphaned grandchildren. The world is a better place because of older women who devote themselves, body and soul, to raising young children to be loved, loving, well-adjusted people. I’m not forgetting that Munro will be a mother, and at her age, will probably never be a grandmother. Still, it isn’t for me to judge a woman who hasn’t been given a chance to prove herself yet. She will cope the same way every new mother does and she will have a child who is very much wanted.

Now that I think about it, maybe we should all keep our noses distinctly out of Elizabeth Munro’s business and let her get on with it.

If your relationship has broken up over something trivial, getting your boyfriend back should be fairly easy. If you both still have strong feelings for each other, but something happened that caused one of you to feel hurt by the other, this is not too hard to fix. If you caused the hurt, apologize. Let your boyfriend know that you are truly sorry for whatever happened. Let him have the opportunity to explain why he felt the way he did. Many times just talking things out will bring you closer together.

If your relationship broke up because your mate lost interest in you, the ways to get your boyfriend back will not be easy, but it is definitely possible it you follow some basic tips. Let him have some space. Don’t contact him under any circumstances. If your heart is bleeding and you feel you need to prance around in places where he will see you, just know that you are killing all the ways to get your boyfriend back by doing this. No contact whatsoever from you. Start to develop other interests. Spend time with friends and enjoy yourself. Although it may be difficult try to be happy and upbeat.

Develop a new hobby where you meet new friends. Take a class in something that interests you. You must truly become enthusiastic about moving on with your life. Men lose interest in women who become too needy. If you advertise that you are seriously upset about the break up you are killing all the ways to get your boyfriend back.

One of the best things you can do is enjoy doing other things. Be happy about life and show it by your behavior. If you start developing new interests and developing new friendships it only makes you more attractive. People are typically more attracted to people that others enjoy spending time with. If you are depressed and staying at home in front of the television every night you will likely end up more depressed and continue to stay at home and sit in front of the television every night. Do your best to develop a sparkle in your eye. When your ex hears from others that you are doing great he will start to worry.

Be a little bit aloof and act like it is no big deal. When your ex starts to think that you are no longer interested in him, he will likely come running.

Visit us today for more tips and ways to get your boyfriend back.

Before you set goals and move forward in 2010, pause and look back. If you’ve been beating yourself up over mistakes you made last year (or before), stop! They could be your best friends-teaching you priceless lessons for future success. Top athletes spend hours after games poring over film replays, examining every move, analyzing each mistake to learn and improve every nuance of their play.

In his fascinating new book How We Decide, author Jonah Lehrer explains the neuroscience behind decision-making. He describes how world-class chess master, Bill Robertie, winner of the U.S. speed chess championship and winner of the World Champion of Backgammon, hones his skills by studying his past plays. “He knows that self-criticism is the secret to self-improvement; negative feedback is the best kind.”

Mistakes are an essential part of healthy growth and self-improvement. Studies show that children excel when not chided for mistakes, but encouraged to find solutions and praised for their ingenuity in putting them right.

Mistakes are inevitable if you’re growing a business. If you’re going to accomplish anything great, you’ll have to take risks and will inevitably make mistakes. Albert Einstein was right when be said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

Beware

In order to learn from and avoid repeating mistakes, don’t:

  • Refuse to admit your mistakes.
  • Allow perfectionism to stop you from taking risks.
  • Get upset with yourself and others when you discover mistakes. This makes it worse, and could prevent you from learning valuable lessons.
  • Waste mistakes. Determine to learn all you can from them.
  • Stop and Learn from Past Mistakes

We all make mistakes, but the very act of stopping to look at past mistakes can help avoid repeating them. Think about what caused the mistake: were you in a hurry, perhaps multitasking at the time and not focused on the task at hand? Did you fail to stop, look over and double check your work, or have someone else check it for you? Reflecting on how you plan to handle similar situations next time can minimize future mistakes.

    Reframe How You View Mistakes

Thomas Edison failed 10,000 times to create the light bulb, but he viewed these ‘mistakes’ as eliminating ways that didn’t work. He saw each ‘mistake’ as a step closer to the winning solution.

So before you look forward and plan for the year ahead, take some time to look back and learn from past mistakes. It may put you light years ahead.

Fear putting yourself in positions where you’re likely to make mistakes.

Your raving fans-those loyal customers you’ve enjoyed serving-have ideas and answers to grow your business. And, chances are they’d love to help you! So take advantage of this priceless resource by throwing a Raving Fans Party.

We have organized these events for several clients with very positive results. If the affair can’t be held at your place of business, decide on an appropriate location. Invite between 15 and 30 enthusiastic, loyal customers, giving several date and time options. Because of scheduling challenges, expect only 50 percent of those invited to attend. We’ve found that 90 minutes is enough time for an effective Raving Fans Party.

Make this a win for clients attending by providing a pleasant environment and serving yummy refreshments and beverages (appropriate to the time of day). Give guests the opportunity to network together and make new friends. Chat with them yourself and introduce those who haven’t met before. This should last approximately 30 minutes.

Call for quiet in the room, and start the formal part of the event by welcoming your guests. Thank them for taking time to attend and tell them how much you appreciate their business. Also express your sincere commitment to further improve the services and/or products you provide. Explain anything they should know about where your business is now and where you want to take it in the future. Keep your introduction to five minutes or less. Then, hand over the floor to your emcee, who will facilitate the remainder of the meeting and conduct a brainstorming session.

Your emcee should ideally be outgoing, upbeat and able to make your guests feel at ease. Don’t attempt to facilitate the event yourself. It’s awkward and inappropriate for you to ask clients what they love about doing business with you, etc. You’ll gain more if you keep quiet, resist the temptation to interrupt and just take notes. You can ask individuals for clarification later if necessary.

Your emcee will address the guests and explain that the purpose of the party is to thank them and ask for their help. He or she will use a flip chart to make note of guests’ ideas. You can also appoint a second person (who can write clearly and fast) to take notes on the flip chart during the brainstorming time.

The emcee will ask the following questions:

    1. What do you enjoy and appreciate about our host and his or her business?

As guests give their answers, the appointed ’scribe’ will write them on the flip chart. These comments can later be used for testimonials on your website and in print materials, but remember to get written permission to use them as such. You might want to take notes of who says what.

    2. Realizing that no one is perfect, how can our host further improve his or her services and products? What could this company do that would make doing business with them easier or more profitable for you? Are there other services or products that you would appreciate the company offering?

Questions should be tailored to fit your current need, industry or profession. While guests are answering, you may be tempted to interrupt or add an explanation. Don’t! Make careful notes of any useful ideas and who mentioned them, and follow up later.

    3. Our host would like to grow this business, and wants to do so with the best clients. How can he or she find more wonderful clients like all of you? What suggestions do you have to help him or her market the business? Brainstorm marketing ideas. Make note of any referrals.

This part of the event should be kept moving fast, and last between 45 and 50 minutes. The emcee or host business owner should then conclude the meeting by thanking everyone for attending and giving their helpful input. Guests should be encouraged to enjoy the refreshments, network and feel free to leave if necessary. You might consider giving each participant a small gift as a token of your appreciation-perhaps a book or gift certificate.

Follow up with guests, thank them and explain how you plan to use their valuable suggestions.

The infection that used to be called lockjaw, and now referred to as tetanus, is a disabling and life threatening illness. It is caused by a bacterium, Clostridium tetani, which inhabits soil and manure. It is common throughout the environment, and the illness is caused when the bacteria or its spores enter an open wound.

Bacterial spores are bacteria in a state of almost suspended animation, and they can persist in soil and dust for many years. They will become active again and start to multiply when they are given the right conditions of moisture, temperature and nutrients, and they get these in abundance in an open wound.

Almost any type of wound can be infected, but deep puncture wounds are most at risk. When the bacteria or spores enter a wound and start to multiply, the create a toxin, which is the actual cause of the illness. Tetanus affects the muscular and nervous systems and the first symptoms of the illness are usually muscle spasms in the muscles nearest to the wound site. These soon spread, usually to the face primarily, then to other areas. Left untreated, tetanus has a fatality rate of about 60%.

Tetanus usually takes between two days and 21 days (or sometimes even more) to become apparent, so when you get a cut that might be a problem, it is worth having it dealt with at once, or else you are liable to forget while tetanus is incubating in your system.

In most of the developed world, there are well established and extremely effective immunization programs that start in childhood, and continue routinely throughout adult life, and most people who are now adults will probably be well protected. It is possible, however, that some of the elderly may not.

The vaccines used are normally multiple vaccines, protecting against tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria, but several variants are available. After the primary series is given, booster shots are given every ten years.

So when should you get a tetanus shot?. If you do not no for sure of your protection status, any penetrating wound, including animal bites should be followed to a visit to the Doctor to get your protection up to date. Even if you know that you have had a full program of immunizations, any deep or dirty wounds, especially those that may be contaminated with manure or soil may require an additional injection of human tetanus immunoglobulin may be given as an additional safeguard.

If your work brings you into frequent contact with soil, or with horses, you must make sure your protection is kept up to date, as is the case if you are travelling to some of the poorer parts of the world outside Europe or the U.S.

Are you sure you are protected? If not, take heed!

During my training as a professional hypnotherapist and during the many years that led to my instructor status involving Neuro-Linguistic Programming, I constantly heard my teachers espousing the wonders of Dr. Milton H. Erickson. Yes, it was Erickson, who has been called the Father of American Hypnotherapy, who gave us tremendous insights into permissive approaches to hypnosis. However, as the cult of Ericksonian followers emerged, it seems that an entire universe of very effective hypnosis was completely whitewashed from the realm of clinical application. Indeed, many authors and self-styled experts – to include international associations that claim the authority to certify hypnotherapists – fail to recognize the power of relatively rapid and direct approaches using suggestion and imagination to heal the mind and body.

The indirect, naturalistic, and permissive Ericksonian approaches are currently dominating medical and psychological applications of hypnosis. They are elegant and particularly suited to fearful and resistant subjects. Clearly, a competent clinician should strive to master the many techniques associated with this system. Nevertheless, should one limit their education solely to the development of such skills, I am afraid to point out that their arsenal of hypnotherapy talents will remain stilted and ineffective in many situations. This is unfortunate, as there are a breadth of highly effective techniques available to the practitioner who seeks to fully understand the wealth and true nature of hypnosis in the healing arts.

Unfortunately, among many of the licensed professionals there seem to be an unjustified prejudice regarding non-Ericksonian skills. In fact, many a publication seeks to establish the credibility of the author’s ideas by unjustly – with limited and uneducated insights – denigrating the traditional skills, usually by using the term authoritarian to bash them. Most of them fail to realize that these near-mythological rants simply stem from a rather emotional dislike between Dr. Erickson, and his chief rival David Elman, a former radio personality and stage hypnotist, who taught thousands of medical doctors and dentists during the 1950’s and 60’s. This rift has been further exacerbated by a handful of Ericksonian-oriented associations who continue the irrational exclusivity proposed by Erickson. The truth, however, is that the techniques taught by Elman were as brilliant in their own right as those of Dr. Erickson.

While Elman was never licensed in the medical or mental health fields, his ideas appear to have been a merger between his traditional direct approaches – which were apparently influenced by stage hypnosis techniques – and his thorough studies of a long line of medical and psychological authorities such as Hippolyte Bernheim, MD, and Henri Munro, MD. It was his effective synthesis of his practical stage-oriented skills with his profound understanding of medical applications of hypnosis that prompted a group of New Jersey physicians – which I believe to be frustrated students of Dr. Erickson – to approach Elman and request that he instruct them on the proper use of hypnosis in medicine. Even though he was quite clear that he lacked formal medical qualifications, he found that his talents were very congruent with the needs of the doctor’s patients.

Elman’s contributions were many. His students learned quick 3-minute techniques that soon evolved into 1-minute techniques and even the wonderful skill of Waking Hypnosis. (The level of trance created by these physicians would never have been achieved using Erickson’s methods.) Add to this the ability to rapidly create levels of trance sufficiently deep for use during extensive surgery. While in my exhaustive study of Elman I found he had difficulty with about 10% of his subjects, he was able to achieve results in many situations that Erickson regarded as impossible.

I have been teaching Elman Hypnotherapy – as well as Ericksonian hypnosis – for several years now. My students have reported very interesting results. This includes medical doctors giving what would normally be painful inoculations without the awareness of their patients and removing sutures and stitches without any form of anesthesia. Also, psychologists and counselors mentioned elegantly relieving pre-surgical stress and alleviating lower back pain. All of this was done not by authoritatively barking commands at a surprised subject, but with the calm, respectful tone that is normally attributed to the permissive practitioner.

A competent, professional hypnotherapist and any licensed professional that regularly employs hypnosis in a medical or mental health practice must become proficient in the wider range of skills. By understanding the that basis of hypnosis is the bypass of resistance and empowering efficient selective thinking, the breadth of the clinicians skills can provide a multitude of approaches to what is a very powerful, yet simple healing technique.

AMAZON – the amarican way of service !! BRAVO
Simply the Best – Heinrich Rosenbaum –

    Zielgruppen:

Ne, da muss ne andere lösung her.

Was auch wunderbar klappt.

Erfüllt also seinen zweck.

    Beware of BSOs!

Are distractions stealing your time and revenue? In our information-laden world we’re barraged daily with a tempting array of possibilities and products — a myriad of Bright Shiny Objects all vying for our time and attention. Those BSOs contending for our interest may be good and worthwhile, but they also divert our focus and decrease productivity. As a small business owner who must wear many different hats to keep your company going and growing, maintaining focus is vital. Without it, you’re unlikely to turn your goal — your dream — into reality.

Use the list below to spot ways you can minimize distractions, maximize your time, and increase productivity and revenue.

    Keys to Keep on Track

o Clearly define your ultimate goal and keep it before you.

o With your ultimate goal in mind, create a daily ‘to-do’ list, prioritize the tasks and stick to it.

o Identify and concentrate on the most important task you should accomplish each day.

o Know when your prime time is and maximize it.

o Learn to recognize and say “no” to opportunities and requests that take your time and don’t move you forward to where you really want to go.

    Limit Interruptions:

o Resolve to check your email and surf the Web only at scheduled times

o Close computer applications you aren’t using

o Designate phone-free times — break that reactive habit of reaching for it whenever it rings, and let voicemail take over

o Shut the office door when working on an important task — leaving it open invites visitors

o Keep a notepad handy to jot down ideas etc. when your own thoughts interrupt you

Recognize BSOs for what they are, quickly shut them down and get back to the task at hand. When we’re focused, our productivity increases and we feel good about our accomplishments at the end of each day. Choose and apply one or two of the keys above to increase your focus this week.
